The “Opposition Alliance” has presented its vision for the steps needed to reduce food prices and what the economy requires in the long term for rapid development. The plan was presented at a press conference by Giorgi Vashadze, leader of the Strategy Aghmashenebeli (Strategy Builder) party:
“Step one: reduce the fuel excise tax by at least half;
Step two: reduce VAT by 1%;
Step three: reduce income tax by 1%.
This means that 1.6 billion will remain in people’s pockets amid rising prices. If the government had the political will to care for the people, it would have acted as other countries do. In other nations where prices are surging, for example on fuel, authorities are taking effective measures. Here, it is quite the opposite: life is becoming more expensive, fines are increasing, and vehicle customs clearance costs are rising.
Second: what is the cause of all this? It is the responsibility of the ‘Georgian Dream’ [the ruling party] criminal group, which prints money and makes life more expensive.
Third: to ensure that in the long term, prices in the country do not rise and life is not more expensive than in Armenia and neighboring countries, a document has been prepared detailing what the government should do and what we would do. This is the choice between them and us,” Giorgi Vashadze noted.
