“It is critically important for the United States that [the Anaklia port] remains open and does not fall under Beijing’s dominance,” U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson stated in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Responding to a question on whether Georgia risks losing its strategic significance for the U.S. amid recent progress between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the congressman noted that Georgia remains a key country in the region. At the same time, he identified growing cooperation with Russia and the Chinese Communist Party as a primary cause for concern, particularly in the context of the Black Sea port of Anaklia.
“China’s interest in Anaklia is tied to controlling the transportation of rare earth resources from Central Asia. These resources must pass through Georgia, making the port strategically vital. For the United States, it is critical that this infrastructure remains open and does not come under Beijing’s dominance.
There is also concern regarding the rapprochement of certain elements within the Georgian government with Iran. Various reports indicate possible cooperation, including intelligence sharing. This is of particular concern given the harsh suppression of dissent and mass repression by the Iranian authorities.
In my view, such actions and ties do not reflect the will and aspirations of the Georgian people, who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to freedom and independence,” Wilson said.
