Grigol Gegelia, Foreign Relations Secretary of the opposition party “Lelo – Strong Georgia,” stated that the issue of Georgia is once again at the center of attention for European Union foreign ministers. This is significant, he emphasized, because the criticism, pressure, and calls for positive action and an end to democratic backsliding directed at the Georgian authorities will only intensify.

Changes in Hungary, the politician continued, will have a positive impact on the discussion of the Georgian issue during the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting on April 21.

“Georgian Dream has lost an important partner in ‘Orbanist’ Hungary, as the Hungarian people have reclaimed their power and peacefully, through political means, rid themselves of the local ‘kotsebi’ (a term used for supporters of Georgian Dream — Ed.). Naturally, this marked the beginning of Hungary’s return to the fold of European politics.

This will have a very positive impact on the Georgian issue, including in the context of determining the fate of the European Union’s general sanctions policy.

It is well known that Hungary was one of the primary parties actively defending the positions of the ‘kotsebi’ and frequently blocking the sanctions measures the European Union was considering against them.

Accordingly, this ministerial meeting is extremely important. The renewed political dynamics in Hungary will undoubtedly be gradually reflected in both the format of the ministerial meetings and the Council of Europe — all of which will clearly have a positive impact on the fate of Georgian democracy, but a negative one on the ‘pro-Russian-kotsebi’ regime,” Gegelia stated.
