The “Opposition Alliance” — comprising nine member parties: Akhali, Girchi – More Freedom, Droa!, the National Democratic Party, European Georgia, Freedom Square, Strategy Aghmashenebeli, and the Federalists — has issued a statement regarding a public announcement by former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.
The opposition emphasized that Saakashvili’s statement was perceived by the Alliance and a significant portion of society as “personal attacks” and contradicts the principles of the political union and the Alliance’s agreement that no single party has the right to declare itself the sole representative of the opposition or the protest movement, nor as a sole or single-party leader.
The “Opposition Alliance” calls on all its member parties to refrain from such “confrontational statements” in the future.
The statement emphasized that the Alliance was established to achieve a critical goal: through close cooperation between pro-Western political forces and Georgian society, to “liberate Georgia from Ivanishvili’s illegitimate pro-Russian regime.” To this end, they reminded, an essential and necessary condition is working in a spirit of mutual cooperation and respect among its members, as well as refraining from mutual attacks.
The nine parties stated that restricting Saakashvili or any other political leader from expressing their political opinions is neither the competence nor the goal of the Alliance.
“However, the personal attacks, which the Alliance and a significant part of society perceived in Mikhail Saakashvili’s statement, contradict these principles, including the provision that no party has the right to declare itself the sole representative of the opposition or the protest movement, or as a sole or single-party leader.
The Alliance calls on all participating parties to refrain from such confrontational statements in the future and to remain faithful to the obligations undertaken before society,” the “Opposition Alliance” statement reads.
