Finnish Foreign Ministry: EU must continue to pressure Georgian authorities

mid finlandia News

The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that Helsinki is deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Georgia, as well as the ongoing restriction of space for civil society and independent media, reports TV Formula.

According to Finland, the EU should continue to exert pressure on the Georgian leadership to change its course.

Helsinki is prepared to consider a wide range of EU instruments, including targeted sanctions.

It is stated that the Georgian government must find a way out of the crisis and restore public trust in democratic institutions.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry emphasizes that recent laws, perceived as repressive within Georgia and by some European politicians, further exacerbate the situation, particularly for NGOs.

“We also strongly condemn the detention of journalists and representatives of the opposition,” the Finnish foreign ministry’s response stated.

Additionally, on April 21, EU foreign ministers will discuss the situation in Georgia, among other issues. This is included in the agenda for the meeting of the heads of EU foreign ministries.
