Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili, stated that there is progress in the Georgian authorities’ relations with the United States. According to her, this is evidenced by a phone conversation between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, as well as a visit planned for May.
“We are pleased that we managed to return to the negotiating table and continue the discussion on Georgian-American relations. At the initial stage, the period from February to the present day was very important…” Bochorishvili said.
The Minister recalled that a Georgian delegation had visited the US, and a State Department representative had traveled to Georgia.
Bochorishvili confirmed that the Georgian authorities expect another visit from the US in May, to be conducted by State Department representatives. This follows a statement made on the morning of April 29 by Prime Minister Kobakhidze, who noted that “communication between the Georgian and American sides will deepen by the end of May.”
However, neither the head of the cabinet nor the Foreign Minister elaborated on the details.
As a reminder, the strategic partnership between Georgia and the US was suspended by the United States on November 30, 2024, during the Joe Biden administration.
The Georgian authorities, several of whom are under US sanctions, expect that the administration of President Donald Trump will change this policy.
On March 30, 2026, a phone conversation took place between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, after which the latter noted that “the conversation was productive.”
Earlier, on March 26, Peter Andreoli, the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the US State Department, met with representatives of the Georgian government and the opposition during a visit to Georgia.
In late January, a delegation of US Congressional staff visited Georgia. Parallel to meetings with government representatives on January 29, the delegation members also met with leaders of several opposition political parties.
