On May 1, a series of legislative amendments regarding traffic regulations came into force. Specifically, sanctions for several violations, including unfastened seatbelts and speeding, have been tightened.
“Every year in Georgia, hundreds of people die or suffer serious injuries as a result of road accidents. In 2025 alone, 469 people died in traffic accidents in Georgia, and another 8,191 were injured.
The tightening of current sanctions is based on a comprehensive analysis of the causes of road accidents and the high mortality rate on Georgia’s roads.
In particular, the changes provide for the following:
- The fine for violating maneuvering rules on the road has been increased to 100 GEL. Additionally, the driver will lose 20 points from their driver’s license for this violation;
- The fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 km/h but not more than 40 km/h has been increased from 50 to 100 GEL;
- The fine for an unfastened seatbelt for the driver or passenger has been increased to 50 GEL, and 10 points will be deducted from the driver’s license for this violation;
- The fine for using a mobile phone while driving has been increased to 50 GEL;
- The fine for violating stopping and parking rules, similar to Tbilisi, has been increased to 50 GEL in Kutaisi, Batumi, Mtskheta, Rustavi, Gori, Telavi, Poti, Zugdidi, Akhaltsikhe, and Ozurgeti, as well as at Georgian resorts and for vehicle categories M3, N2, N3, and T;
- Drifting that results in minor property damage or minor health injury will, in addition to a 500 GEL fine, lead to a 6-month suspension of driving privileges;
- A repeated traffic violation that creates an emergency situation or a traffic jam will be punished with a 300 GEL fine and the deduction of 30 points;
- A fine of 500 GEL is stipulated for the movement of category N2 and/or N3 freight transport on public roads in Tbilisi if the destination of the freight transport is not located within Tbilisi.
New offenses have also been introduced:
- Stopping or parking a vehicle on a sidewalk or pedestrian crossing will be punishable by a 100 GEL fine in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Mtskheta, Rustavi, Gori, Telavi, Poti, Zugdidi, Akhaltsikhe, Ozurgeti, and at Georgian resorts, and 10 GEL in other municipalities;
- Driving a vehicle on a sidewalk will be punishable by a 200 GEL fine and the deduction of 30 points;
- A new prohibitory sign, “No stopping at fire hydrants,” has been introduced. Violations will be punished with a 200 GEL fine, and the vehicle may be towed to a specialized impound lot;
- Rules for driving in BUS LANES have also been changed: driving in a BUS LANE (except for scheduled transit vehicles) will, in addition to the existing 100 GEL fine, be accompanied by the deduction of 15 points, and a repeated violation will result in a 150 GEL fine and the deduction of 30 points;
- Driving, stopping, or parking in an oncoming BUS LANE will result in a 200 GEL fine and the deduction of 20 points, while a repeated violation will result in a 300 GEL fine and the deduction of 30 points,” the statement said.
