The French Embassy in Georgia has issued a statement in connection with World Press Freedom Day, emphasizing that democracy in the country is impossible without reliable information and a commitment to the truth.

Advocacy Coalition: Pressure on media intensifies in Georgia — over 300 cases in a year

“Since democracy is impossible without providing citizens with reliable information, and since high-quality information has become a rarity and is under threat at a time when propaganda and political marketing sometimes drown out the pursuit of simple truth, the French Embassy in Georgia wishes on this day, May 3, World Press Freedom Day, to express its support for all Georgian journalists who, regardless of their political views, perform their work with diligence and courage, striving to inform public debate.

Everywhere, the responsibility for creating the legal, political, and practical conditions in which the indispensable freedom of speech for journalists can be exercised rests with state authorities,” the statement reads.
