The Georgian citizen detained on espionage charges, as reported by the State Security Service of Georgia (SSG), has been identified as Giorgi Udzilauri, according to Rustavi 2.
According to the broadcaster, Udzilauri had until now served as the head of a department within the Investigative Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia and was allegedly engaged in espionage for a European state.
The SSG of Georgia reported the detention of a Georgian citizen on espionage charges, stating he acted on the instructions of foreign intelligence services to collect and transmit information.
Lasha Magradze, First Deputy Head of the SSG, provided details of the case at a briefing. He noted that counterintelligence operations had been conducted intensively over the past few months.
The investigation established that the detainee held a high-ranking position in a state agency. Magradze stated that the individual “systematically collected information” in the interests of a foreign intelligence service, utilizing both his current official position and his former roles and personal connections within various structures.
