The case of Georgy Udzilauri—head of a department within the Investigative Service of the Ministry of Finance and former head of public relations for Cartu Group—has been classified as “top secret.” This was reported to journalists by defense attorney Beka Guledani. Meanwhile, the espionage suspect maintains his innocence.
“The defendant is exercising his right to remain silent. This means he does not plead guilty. I cannot provide any further details regarding the case,” said Beka Guledani.
As a reminder, Georgy Udzilauri was detained on May 5. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, an investigation conducted by the Counterintelligence Department of the State Security Service (SSG) established that a high-ranking official from a state agency, acting for financial gain and to the detriment of Georgia’s interests, systematically collected and transmitted various categories of information on behalf of a foreign intelligence service.
He has been charged under Article 314 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (espionage), which carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
