Preparations have begun in the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) in Tbilisi for the Extended Council of the Georgian Orthodox Church, where the new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia will be elected.
Earlier, a Sunday service was held at the cathedral, led by the Locum Tenens (acting head) of the Patriarchal Throne, Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri) of Senaki and Chkhorotsqu. Other hierarchs were also present in the cathedral.
Barriers have already been delivered to the Sameba courtyard, and preparations are underway to install sound equipment for the assembly.
The Extended Council of the Georgian Orthodox Church will take place at 1:00 PM at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi. The new patriarch will be elected during the meeting.
The Holy Synod previously approved three candidates for the patriarchal throne: the Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne, Metropolitan Shio (Mujiri); Metropolitan Iov of Urbnisi and Ruisi; and Metropolitan Grigol of Poti and Khobi.
