Salome Zourabichvili, the fifth president of Georgia, was present at the session of the French National Assembly where the resolution on Georgia was discussed. Zourabichvili shared this information on social media.
The resolution was adopted by French deputies the day before — by 68 votes to 28.
The document contains criticism of the Georgian authorities’ policies. The authors of the resolution condemn what they call the “authoritarian course” of the Georgian government, violations of fundamental rights, restrictions on freedom of speech and assembly, and the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters.
The document calls on European institutions to maintain the de facto suspension of Georgia’s accession process to the European Union until political conditions are met. These include ensuring political pluralism, protecting freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association, and holding free parliamentary elections that comply with international standards.
Furthermore, the resolution calls on the French authorities to support democratic institutions in Georgia, including non-governmental organizations, independent media, and academic institutions. The French government is also urged to publicly condemn foreign influence on Georgian political institutions, specifically the influence of Russia and businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili.
A separate point in the document calls for the introduction of targeted sanctions against Ivanishvili and his inner circle.
The final part of the resolution emphasizes that the actions of the current Georgian authorities should not close off the prospect of European integration for the country; however, the process of rapprochement with the EU must depend on adherence to the principles of the rule of law and the protection of fundamental rights.
