“The process aimed at the annexation of the Tskhinvali region by the Russian Federation has entered an active and extremely dangerous phase against the backdrop of the criminal silence and inaction of the ‘Georgian Dream’ authorities,” reads a statement by the “For Georgia” party. Members of the political association led by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia are calling on the government to break its silence and inaction and respond promptly to the ongoing developments.
“The State Duma (the lower house of the Russian parliament) at a plenary session passed a federal law initiated by Vladimir Putin on the ratification of an agreement to deepen allied cooperation between the Russian Federation and the so-called ‘Republic of South Ossetia,’ which marks a step toward the de facto annexation of the Tskhinvali region. It is particularly symbolic and cynical that this agreement was signed on May 9.
The criminal silence of the ‘Georgian Dream’ authorities is now evident to everyone, both regarding the content of meetings held within the framework of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) and the Geneva International Discussions, and in connection with the statement by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova that the Russian Federation is working confidentially on moving the Geneva format to ‘neutral territory.’
Recent actions by ‘Georgian Dream’—public apologies, attempts to portray Georgia as the aggressor in the August 2008 war, and the politically motivated criminal prosecution of the former Prime Minister of Georgia, whom the ‘Georgian Dream’ authorities are trying using the rhetoric of the Russian occupation regime in Tskhinvali and Russian propaganda narratives for establishing a standard police post in the village of Chorchana to protect Georgian land and prevent creeping occupation—directly indicate that these processes are in a suspicious and criminal connection with the annexation of the Tskhinvali region by the Russian Federation,” the statement says.
