Georgia is beginning large-scale celebrations to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion. Preparations for the jubilee events were discussed at a joint meeting of the government commission and the Patriarchate, held at the Government Administration.
The commission is co-chaired by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Shio III.
The festive events will kick off as early as May 26, but the main part of the program will begin on June 1 and will include cultural, educational, and scientific projects across the country.
As part of the jubilee, scientific conferences, student expeditions, and various cultural and educational events dedicated to the history of Christianity in Georgia are planned.
The celebrations will run until Svetitskhovloba — October 14 — one of the country’s major religious holidays. A symposium on the theme “God, Homeland, Man” is also scheduled for this day.
The events are being co-organized by the Government of Georgia and the Patriarchate. The authorities emphasize that the jubilee will be one of the largest religious and cultural events of 2026.
