The cult film *Roots*, over which, it seems, every Georgian has wept, tells the story of a young man who arrives in France in the early 20th century to find work, but is unable to return home due to historical upheavals. Year after year, life goes on in a foreign land: he marries, has children, and dotes on his grandson, but an overwhelming homesickness remains a constant leitmotif throughout all these decades. In the end, he leaves a final wish for his ashes to be scattered in Georgia.
Our protagonist today has no connection to this film, but every parallel between his life story and the screenplay is absolutely real.
