Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvirivishvili stated that the decisive factor for signing the large-scale package of agreements between Georgia and Azerbaijan was the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Tbilisi and his meeting with the founder of the Georgian Dream party, its honorary chairman and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili.

The Minister noted that following the talks, the sides began moving “very effectively and quickly” toward finalizing the agreements.

Kvirivishvili called the signed agreements “historic” for both countries, particularly emphasizing the importance of energy cooperation for Georgia.

The politician added that the new agreements will strengthen Georgia’s energy security, and Azerbaijan will continue to be Tbilisi’s strategic partner in this area.

As a reminder, on May 18, Georgia and Azerbaijan signed a package of agreements in the fields of energy and transport. It includes a 20-year intergovernmental agreement on electricity supplies and transit, as well as a 20-year extension of the contract for Azerbaijani gas supplies, which has been in place since 2003. According to the Georgian authorities, this will ensure the stability of social gas supply in the country.

In addition, starting May 26, a daily passenger train will begin running between Tbilisi and Baku.
