At a special briefing, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the poverty rate in Georgia had decreased to 7.1% in 2025, which means that 90,000 Georgian citizens had crossed the poverty line. According to him, this was due to the growth of economic indicators.
According to him, 7.1% is an indicator that shows that the country’s poverty rate has decreased threefold since 2020, from 21.3%, and the average annual decrease over the past five years has been 2.84%.
Kobakhidze recalled that in 2012, more than 1.12 million people lived below the poverty line, while in 2025, this figure decreased to less than 280 people.
“One of our main national tasks remains the complete eradication of poverty in Georgia. As long as almost 280 thousand of our fellow citizens continue to live below the poverty line, we have no right to relax,” the politician said.
The Head of government stressed that the main indicator of poverty, according to international standards, is an absolute indicator, that is, “absolute poverty”, and not a comparative indicator. He added that the NET income of citizens in 2020 was 13 billion lari, and today it is 33 billion lari.
Kobakhidze also stated that if the current rate of economic growth and poverty reduction continues, Georgia will be able to completely eliminate poverty by 2030.
The Prime Minister stated that since 2020, the country’s economy has increased from 50 billion lari to 105 billion lari in national currency, and from 16 billion dollars to 38 billion dollars in dollar terms.
Kobakhidze emphasized that maintaining high economic growth rates remains one of the key objectives of the government, as it directly affects the creation of new jobs, the growth of average salaries, and the expansion of social support services.
“High economic growth directly contributes to reducing poverty,” said the Georgian Prime Minister.
