Georgia is participating in the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, currently taking place in Vilnius, where the country’s parliamentary delegation is in attendance.
Representatives of the Alliance’s member states and partners are discussing security in Europe, the war in Ukraine, threats from Russia, and the strengthening of NATO’s defense.
Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, stated that hybrid and military threats posed by the Russian Federation were among the main topics of the meeting. Participants in the session also discussed extending the terms of compulsory military service in NATO countries, investments in military technology, and measures to strengthen security on the alliance’s eastern flank.
The Georgian Dream MP noted that the Deputy Secretary General of NATO addressed the session, speaking about plans to increase member states’ defense spending to up to 5% of gross domestic product.
He also noted that Ukraine has become a platform for the implementation and testing of new military technologies.
“Today, Ukraine possesses some of the strongest military units, and NATO must draw the appropriate conclusions from this experience,” Samkharadze said, conveying the remarks of the Alliance’s Deputy Secretary General.
The head of the parliamentary committee emphasized that Georgia is participating in the assembly’s work as a NATO partner.
“We are participating in this session to bring the parliamentary structures of Georgia and NATO even closer,” he stated.
