posolstvo ssha ameriki News

The US Embassy in Georgia stated that a US State Department delegation conveyed to the Georgian side the Donald Trump administration’s readiness for constructive and future-oriented relations—specifically, a message that the US looks forward to working with the Georgian government on a partnership that will bring tangible benefits to both countries and fully realize the potential of bilateral relations.

Washington also emphasized that it considers it crucial to create favorable conditions for American business, maintain political stability, and ensure the full participation of the opposition in Georgia’s political process.

“For a sustainable strategic partnership, continuous progress is needed to ensure conditions that make Georgia a reliable partner, including a favorable business environment for American companies and a stable domestic political climate that fosters opposition participation,” the statement emphasized.

It was also noted that the US delegation met with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Vice Prime Minister Maka Botchorishvili, State Minister Mamuka Mdinaradze, as well as other government representatives, to discuss future ways to improve bilateral relations.

“The delegation conveyed to the Georgian government the Trump administration’s readiness for constructive and future-oriented relations and expressed interest in starting a new phase of bilateral relations between sovereign partners, based on mutual respect, shared interests, and honest dialogue,” the statement reads.

The parties discussed potential areas of alignment between US and Georgian interests, including:

“This alignment creates a strong foundation for deepening the partnership. The American delegation emphasized interest in expanding commercial cooperation with Georgia, including broader access for American goods and investments, as well as deepening cooperation in the fields of security and energy.

<…> The delegation discussed concrete steps the Georgian government can take to achieve these goals.

The US looks forward to working with the Georgian government on a partnership that will bring tangible benefits to both countries and fully unlock the potential of bilateral relations,” the statement says.

What was said about the meetings with the opposition?

Members of the US State Department delegation also held meetings with leaders of Georgia’s opposition parties, discussing the political situation in Georgia and the role of the opposition in democratic institutions.

It is reported that political stability and the meaningful participation of the opposition are factors that make Georgia a more reliable partner for American investment, security cooperation, and long-term strategic partnership.

The delegation heard the concerns of the government’s “main” opponents—representatives of the United National Movement (UNM), Lelo, the Coalition for Change, and Gakharia for Georgia—regarding the treatment of the opposition after October 2024, including the case in the Constitutional Court (the Georgian Dream’s demand to outlaw the “radical opposition” in the country—Ed.) and the current political situation.

“The delegation outlined the US position on the role of the opposition in Georgia’s democratic institutions. A functioning democracy requires the presence of a political opposition that engages with state institutions and represents the interests of its constituents.

Political stability and the meaningful participation of the opposition are factors that make Georgia a reliable partner for American investment, security cooperation, and long-term strategic partnership.

The US is committed to constructive engagement with all serious political forces interested in the stability, sovereignty, and prosperity of their country,” the statement says.
