“We welcome today’s statement by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia on the arrest of several individuals on charges of fraud against Georgian citizens related to illegal entry into the United States and document forgery.
This was the result of months of close cooperation between US and Georgian law enforcement agencies.
We thank the staff of the Prosecutor’s Office and Georgian law enforcement officers who took part in the investigation and operation,” the diplomatic mission wrote on X.
Notably, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia reported that a joint operation between the prosecutor’s office and the Regional Security Office of the US Embassy had uncovered two organized crime groups.
According to reports, following the tightening of US immigration policy, four Georgian citizens formed an organized crime group. They targeted Georgian citizens seeking asylum in the US, promising to help them prepare a so-called “case”—the narrative required to obtain asylum—gather evidence, and provide representation in court.
Mikaya stated that the identities of 366 Georgian citizens who had approached the members of this criminal group to obtain asylum in the US have been established.
