The East-West Highway and other central highways in Georgia will not be turned into toll roads, the Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia has announced.
The statement emphasized that this issue is not being considered at this stage, and no decision has been made. Meanwhile, the acceleration of the rehabilitation of the Gomi–Sachkhere–Chiatura–Zestafoni road is solely linked to the need for a timely and high-quality completion of the project.
The department noted that while various road financing and management models exist in international practice, this requires a comprehensive analysis.
“Today, the use of international and domestic roads is free of charge for the population of Georgia, and no changes in this direction are planned.
<…> We urge the media, when covering socially significant issues, to verify the official position of the relevant agencies and provide the public with complete and objective information,” the Ministry of Infrastructure urged.
