Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MID), stated that the EU is not ready to grant membership not only to Armenia, but also to candidates for EU accession.

“We note that the Armenian authorities have been moving toward the European Union at an accelerated pace in their words, statements, and actions, demonstrating this in every possible way.

Are they expected there? How long can this rhetorical question be asked?

In my opinion, the answer is already obvious: they are not waiting even for those who were candidates. If there are no statuses close to candidacy, then it is obvious they are not expected,” the Moscow representative stated.

To recall, the Armenian parliament passed a law on March 26, 2025, to launch the EU accession process. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at the same time that Yerevan does not intend to withdraw from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and hopes to combine membership in the organization with integration into the EU for as long as possible.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that integration with the EU automatically entails the termination of Armenia’s cooperation with the EAEU and the loss of all associated preferences.
