“The purpose of today’s meeting between the European Commission and a delegation of official representatives of Georgia is to resolve the circumstances that led to the suspension of the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens holding diplomatic, service, and official passports,” stated European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert at a briefing prior to the meeting with the Georgian side on visa issues.

“This is a standard procedure provided for by the visa regulation mechanism, which is triggered after the activation of the visa suspension mechanism.

It follows a decision taken in March 2026, which provides for a 12-month suspension of the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens holding diplomatic, service, and official passports.

I would also like to recall the circumstances that caused the suspension. This concerns Georgia’s failure to fulfill its commitments undertaken under the visa-free regime in the key areas of democracy and fundamental rights,” the European Commission spokesperson noted.
