Georgia to aggregate all store discounts on a single website

produkti News

A unified platform will be created in Georgia, allowing shoppers in the country to access information about current discounts and special offers across various retail chains on a single electronic platform. This is stated in a decree issued by the Government of Georgia on June 2.

The system will be developed by the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency of Georgia. To fund this, 53,000 lari will be allocated from the state budget’s reserve fund.

The document also outlines the platform’s objective: to ensure the availability of information on discounted goods, the electronic processing of data on discounts and special offers in retail chains, and their provision to consumers.

The authorities note that with the website, shoppers will be able to easily compare promotions across different stores and search for the best deals in one place.

As a reminder, the Competition Agency announced the creation of the platform back in May. The decision was made based on recommendations from the price study commission.

To achieve this, retail chains will be integrated into the program and will be required to provide weekly updates on the best offers and prices for basic products included in the “Consumer Basket” program. This data will be regularly updated on the information portal.

The temporary commission of the Parliament of Georgia on studying prices for food, medicines, and fuel presented its findings in the first half of May, stating that the main issue is not excessive corporate profits, but rather inefficient operating expenses. In addition, the supply chain remains too long and inefficient.

The basket of discounted goods includes 10 to 15 items — namely pasta, buckwheat, vegetable oil, eggs, rice, and in some cases, dairy products.
