Nikoloz Samkharadze, the head of the parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, stated that the Georgian side is asking Luxembourg to facilitate the resumption of dialogue between Georgia and the EU.
A Georgian delegation is currently in Luxembourg, where it has provided the heads of the parliamentary committees on foreign affairs and defense with comprehensive information regarding the situation in Georgia and the region.
Samkharadze noted that the Luxembourgish MPs had questions on specific matters and heard from their Georgian counterparts about “what is happening in Georgia and the region, Georgia’s role in the peace process in the South Caucasus, the challenges related to the Russian occupation, as well as the issues in relations between Georgia and the European Union.”
“In addition, we asked the Luxembourgish side to raise the issue of resuming dialogue with Georgia with the European Commission.
The meeting was highly engaging and generated significant interest. There are relatively few MPs in the Luxembourg Parliament, yet more than ten parliamentarians attended the meeting. This clearly demonstrates the level of interest that exists in Georgia,” Samkharadze said.
The “Georgian Dream” MP also spoke about a meeting held at Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the request to help resume dialogue between Brussels and Tbilisi was conveyed.
“We are ready to resume dialogue in any format and are prepared to discuss sensitive issues, including the law that served as the formal pretext for suspending dialogue between the European Union and Georgia. This refers to the law ‘On Transparency of <Foreign Influence>’ (the foreign agents law). The Luxembourgish side took a fairly constructive approach to our position, and we hope that during meetings of EU member states, they will support the resumption of dialogue with Georgia,” Samkharadze said.
The committee chairman also announced that Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili will travel to Luxembourg in the autumn.
