Salome Zourabichvili: Why pay so much attention to infighting in one of the opposition parties

The fifth president of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, commented on the developments surrounding the United National Movement, specifically the party founder’s attempts to nominate journalist Nanuka Zhorzholiani as a candidate for its chairperson. Writing on social media, Salome Zourabichvili stated:

“Why devote so much attention and time to internal squabbles and emotional conflicts in one of the opposition parties when there are far more acute and important issues both inside and outside the country?

Today, Elene Khoshtaria needs our attention and solidarity, especially because she herself does not ask for mercy from those who call themselves the authorities. It is thanks to such resilience that Elene has become one of the powerful symbols of the resistance movement, alongside political prisoners, Mzia Amaglobeli, and the protesters on Rustaveli Avenue. Today, a delegation from the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture is in Tbilisi, and we must provide them with full information on the health status and detention conditions of Elene Khoshtaria, Giorgi Chikvaidze, Mzia Amaglobeli, Anastasia Zinovkina, and others.

Today, Georgia’s future is also being decided outside the country. European Union leaders are meeting today and tomorrow to discuss new aid for Ukraine, on which the G7 has already expressed its position. Everyone sees that Ukraine is winning, while Vladimir Putin is weakening daily on the battlefield, within his own country, and on the international stage.

Tomorrow, a memorandum will be signed between the United States of America and Iran, and the world’s attention will be focused on the content of this agreement.

Against the backdrop of these two crucial issues, it remains unknown whether the European Council will find time to discuss the Georgian issue, as also indicated by the European Parliament’s resolution.

However, there are signs that the regime is experiencing fear: relying solely on Russia is no longer so reassuring. Following the weakening of the Hungarian factor, fears have arisen regarding potential decisive actions from Europe.

This is why we have seen these timid steps recently: Luxembourg, Samkharadze, Khatuna Tortladze… Meanwhile, the European Union has already set its conditions if dialogue is to be restored. The same, she noted, was stated by Marco Rubio on behalf of the US.

In short, huge changes are taking place both inside and outside the country, and instead of analyzing, understanding, and developing our own strategy, we are discussing what happened somewhere in a back alley,” Salome Zourabichvili wrote.
