Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that Russia and four other states do not recognize Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region as part of Georgia, which constitutes “an attack on the country’s sovereignty.” The European Parliament, he noted, also does not recognize the country’s sovereignty.
Kobakhidze added that the country’s authorities are pursuing a non-recognition policy in various directions.
“We are pursuing a non-recognition policy in various directions and are ready to pursue the same policy toward the European Parliament.
The Russian Federation and four other states do not recognize Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region [as part] of Georgia.
Similarly, the European Parliament does not recognize Georgia’s sovereignty over the country’s entire territory. That is their business. We are pursuing a policy of countering non-recognition.
When you do not recognize the government elected by the people, it constitutes an attack on the country’s sovereignty. We will oppose this policy. Our task is to ensure that everyone recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, just as both the Russian State Duma (the lower house of parliament) and the European Parliament will, and we will work towards this.
In its current state and spirit, the European Parliament strongly resembles the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, particularly in the Soviet approaches that guide them. This is a tragic situation,” the Prime Minister stated.
