Georgian Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze stated that Dr. Giorgi Chakhunashvili has a choice – he can enter into a plea agreement with the prosecutor’s office if he admits to the “crime committed… and repents” and confesses.
“A plea agreement was concluded with all defendants who admitted guilt and repented for committing the crime.
As for Chakhunashvili, he did not plead guilty and did not repent, which is why the court had no other option, as the relevant article carries a prison sentence and does not provide for alternative punishment.
An alternative mechanism in this case could have been a plea agreement.
At the same time, I can say with confidence: if he decides to admit to the crime he is accused of and repents, and, in the event of an appeal, confesses in the court of appeal, we can release him on the very same day,” Gvarakidze stated.
