“For Georgia” Party Appeals to Prosecutor’s Office Following Parliament Brawl

The “For Georgia” party has appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office, demanding an investigation into a physical altercation that took place in parliament on June 26. Party MP Tata Khvedeliani announced this outside the prosecutor’s office building. She is convinced that the attack on the opposition faction MPs was pre-planned; however, despite the widespread circulation of video recordings of the incident and the presence of law enforcement officials, an investigation has not yet been launched.

“We have waited four days, yet the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office remains silent, despite the fact that the violence occurred in the presence of the Minister of Internal Affairs and other law enforcement officials.

While Mzia Amaglobeli is in prison for slapping a police officer whom she accused of using violence, and a mother of four is detained for defacing a campaign banner with a marker, ‘Georgian Dream’ is increasingly resembling a violent regime.

First of all, we demand justice on behalf of those people who have been striving for the restoration of justice in our country for years and demand accountability for all violent acts committed by ‘Georgian Dream’ and its representatives,” Tata Khvedeliani stated.

She also noted that expectations regarding the launch of an investigation are low, but the party intends to use all legal avenues available to it:

“What expectations can we have, given the events of recent years? We are witnessing gross violations of human rights in Georgia, which have drawn sharp statements from around the world. Nevertheless, we are using every mechanism at our disposal solely to protect the dignity and rights of the people whose rights are being violated today by ‘Georgian Dream’, which resorts to violence only to maintain its grip on power.

Let me remind you once again: this organized crime was committed against us solely because the Prime Minister and his incompetent government team had no answers to any of the questions we raised. Our questions concerned annexation processes, the economic situation, poverty, and all the pressing issues that concern the citizens of this country today. Therefore, we have filed an application and expect an appropriate response,” Khvedeliani said.

Background: On June 26, verbal and physical clashes broke out in the chamber of the Georgian Parliament. MPs from the “For Georgia” party and representatives of the “Georgian Dream” party were involved in the brawl.

The conflict began after a speech by “For Georgia” MP Giorgi Sharashidze. He mentioned the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Georgia and, addressing the Prime Minister, stated:

“All of Georgia saw the footage of you standing in the corner. This indicates your real role and place in power. Georgia has had various prime ministers, but never one like this.”

Following these words, first a verbal and then a physical altercation took place.
