Tbilisi City Hall has announced an initiative to utilize existing railway infrastructure to improve the capital’s transport connectivity with Mtskheta, Rustavi, Tbilisi International Airport, and the eastern districts of the city. As Kakha Kaladze announced at a recent meeting of the city government, there are plans to conduct a feasibility study for the development of an urban rail corridor in cooperation with Georgian Railway. An international tender has been launched for this purpose.
“The international tender has been launched under the procurement rules of the Asian Development Bank, with the deadline for submissions set for July 13…
The project primarily envisages utilizing existing railway infrastructure, though the construction of new sections or bypass lines may be considered if necessary…
The goal of the project is for a qualified consulting firm to conduct a detailed feasibility study to determine the best alternatives for developing the urban rail corridor within the Tbilisi metropolitan area. Environmental, social, and financial aspects will also be assessed.
The best bidder will be selected from the participating companies, and research work will begin once the tender procedures are completed. After that, we will have a complete picture of the project’s implementation and detailed information on the next steps.
The project is part of the capital’s transport plan and is being implemented with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank,” Kaladze noted.
He also added that the study process, technical supervision, and coordination will be carried out by the Transport and Urban Development Agency of Tbilisi City Hall.
