ALDE (the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, a European political alliance) plans to adopt a resolution on Georgia at a conference in Vienna.
The Droa party submitted the draft document, which states that “while the wider region is reducing Russia’s influence, Georgia’s ruling party has turned its governance into Russia’s last stronghold and satellite in Eastern Europe.”
ALDE recognizes the unwavering commitment of the Georgian people to their aspiration to join the EU. It expresses concern over the recent arrests of politicians and protesters. In this context, the document mentions doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili, Droa party leader Elene Khoshtaria, and Paata Manjgaladze, Secretary General of the Strategy Aghmashenebeli party.
ALDE calls on EU leaders and European states to introduce personal sanctions against those responsible for democratic backsliding and serious human rights violations in the country, as well as against “networks supporting and financing the Ivanishvili regime.”
The political alliance recommends maintaining a clear distinction between “Georgian Dream” and the population of Georgia, and not suspending the visa-free regime for the country’s citizens.
ALDE is scheduled to adopt the resolution on Georgia on July 4.
