Freight carriers transporting goods between Georgia and Turkey will be able to obtain international permits electronically, as both countries adopt a unified electronic system. The Land Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy of Georgia announced the innovation.

Previously, these permits were paper-based. The new system will save time and optimize the transport network:

The agency noted that the electronic ECMT (European Conference of Ministers of Transport) multilateral permit system had been introduced previously, and that launching digital permit exchange with Turkey marks a major milestone in the development of international road freight transport.

“This mechanism ensures fast and secure data exchange, reduces technical and administrative delays, and creates a more transparent and modern system for administering international road freight transport.

A working group has already been established at this stage. According to the Agency’s future plans, the transition of existing permit systems with other partner countries to a digital format will be carried out in phases,” said Bakur Mikadze, Director of the Land Transport Agency.

The ECMT is a multilateral permit system that allows carriers to operate international routes among several member countries without the need to obtain a separate bilateral permit for each trip.

This accelerates goods delivery, reduces costs for carriers, and fosters a more modern international logistics system.
