Georgia’s State Security Service (SSSG) has announced the detention of a Georgian citizen, previously placed on a wanted list, in the neutral zone between checkpoints on the Georgian-Armenian border in connection with the “October 4 storming” case.

Deputy Head of the SSSG Lasha Magradze stated that the detainee is charged with the acquisition and possession of a large quantity of firearms, ammunition, and explosives. Investigators allege that these materials may have been intended for organizing acts of sabotage during the events of October 4, 2025, when an attempt was made to storm the Orbeliani Palace, the residence of the President of Georgia.

The SSSG stated that earlier, in October 2025, agency officers discovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives with a detonator in a forested area near Tbilisi.

Investigators claim that the detainee acquired the weapons on the instructions of a Georgian citizen linked to one of the military units operating in Ukraine. According to the SSSG, the weapons and explosives could have been used by the organizers of the unrest to carry out acts of sabotage.

The agency also reported that the investigation into the detainee’s potential links to other individuals who may have been involved in organizing the events of October 4 last year is ongoing; investigators are verifying his possible contacts with former Georgian Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia, opera singer Paata Burchuladze, and other figures in the case.

Magradze stated that the detainee had previously been charged under Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which covers the illegal acquisition and possession of weapons and ammunition. A court had ordered him to be remanded in custody as a preventive measure, after which he was placed on the wanted list.

The SSSG emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are also examining the potential preparation of an act of sabotage and other circumstances of the case.
