The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, commented on the statement by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, who indicated that Brussels has “practically” no political contacts with the Georgian government and does not want to support it, but wishes to support the Georgian people.
Papuashvili accused the European politician of groundless attacks on the Georgian authorities and disrespect for the choice of the Georgian people. Speaking from Telavi, the Speaker pointed out that Kallas’s statements do not contribute to relations between Georgia and the EU, but, on the contrary, undermine the Georgian public’s trust in Brussels.
The head of parliament noted that some high-ranking EU officials continue to speak to the democratically elected authorities of a sovereign state in a “mentoring tone” instead of conducting an equal dialogue.
«Some high-ranking EU representatives still prefer to speak to the democratically elected government of a sovereign state in a mentoring tone instead of an equal dialogue.
<…> The formula «I support the people, but not their government» actually means that, in Ms. Kallas’s opinion, the Georgian people are incapable of choosing their own government and therefore need external mentorship.
This is not support for the Georgian people, but disrespect for their political choice. Until Ms. Kallas clearly distances herself from the justification of terrorism by her political partners, any further comments she makes about Georgia will not be taken seriously», — the Speaker believes.
