The accused, Revaz Elizbarashvili, who was driving under the influence of alcohol when he struck a mother and child in Gori, had more than 225 administrative fines, according to prosecutor Shorena Mgaloblishvili.
In an interview with the Pirveli TV channel, she stated that these violations included numerous fines for speeding.
The day before, a court remanded Elizbarashvili in custody as a preventive measure. He has been charged under Part 9 of Article 276 of the Criminal Code of Georgia—violation of traffic safety rules while driving under the influence, resulting in the death of two people. The maximum penalty under this article is up to 12 years in prison.
The fatal accident occurred on July 13 on Chavchavadze Street in the center of Gori. An SUV struck a young woman and her three-year-old daughter who were crossing the road. Both victims died in hospital.
