Maka Botchorishvili: Political Terrorism Threatens Democracy and State Sovereignty

bochorishvili News

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili took part in a ministerial meeting in Washington on “The Resurgence of Political Terrorism,” where she addressed the participants. In her speech, Botchorishvili emphasized that placing the issue of political terrorism on the international agenda is particularly important in light of contemporary security challenges.

“Today, we face complex and constantly evolving challenges that directly affect our national interests, sovereignty, and security. Around the world, radical groups operate under various ideological slogans, often hiding behind the guise of democracy. However, their goal is not to strengthen democratic institutions, but to weaken them…

Over the past few years, we have witnessed numerous attempts, under various pretexts, to divide our society and weaken democratic institutions. We have observed coordinated campaigns aimed at discrediting state institutions, including the judiciary, the electoral system, and other constitutional bodies. We have also seen attempts by radical groups to use violence and acts of sabotage as a political tool…

No less troubling is the use of international institutions to legitimize such actions through resolutions and other mechanisms aimed at exerting political pressure on sovereign states. This simultaneously undermines the reputation of and trust in the international organizations themselves…

This should concern us all, as political terrorism does not always manifest itself overtly. It can be expressed through intimidation, political violence, and systematic attempts to weaken democratic institutions. This is a challenge for all democracies that strive to protect their institutions, sovereignty, and the will of their own people,” Botchorishvili stated.
