A complete reconstruction of Rustaveli Avenue will begin in Tbilisi on July 23, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced.
According to him, the works will start at 00:00 and continue until the end of November this year.
Kaladze stated that the project is being implemented as part of one of the city authorities’ campaign promises. Previously, the work had been postponed several times because the announced tenders fell through due to a lack of bidders, but a contractor has now been selected to begin the reconstruction.
“Rustaveli Avenue is the hallmark of our capital, both historically and architecturally. It must be modern, safe, and well-maintained, so that city residents and guests of Georgia can be rightfully proud of it,” Kaladze said.
The work will cover a section from Tamar Chovelidze Street to Freedom Square, with a total length of about 2 km. In addition, during the reconstruction, all vehicular traffic on Rustaveli Avenue, as well as on a section of Merab Kostava Street, will be completely closed.
In the first phase, the company will replace underground utility networks, including water supply, sewerage, stormwater drainage, and gas supply systems.
It is also known that overhead power lines will be moved underground, and underground waste collection containers will be installed.
The reconstruction of the avenue also entails resurfacing the road and sidewalks, replacing the street lighting system with new LED lights, landscaping green areas, and planting new trees.
According to the mayor, pedestrian crossings will be installed, road signs and markings will be updated, and the entire infrastructure of the avenue will become fully accessible for people with disabilities.
Kaladze stated that the relevant municipal services will monitor the progress of the work around the clock to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
