Lithuania, within the framework of bilateral dialogue with the new Syrian authorities and at the level of EU engagement with Damascus, is raising the issue of revoking the recognition of the Tskhinvali region, Abkhazia, and Ukrainian territories, which was carried out under the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expects the new Syrian authorities to make a clear break from the policies of the Assad regime.
“This includes the closure of Russian military bases in Syria, the revocation of the recognition of the so-called independence of the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine and Georgia, as well as holding high-ranking representatives of the Assad regime accountable for crimes committed during his rule,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a written comment to the Georgian media outlet Tabula.
Vilnius stated that these issues are being raised both within the framework of bilateral dialogue with Syria and at the level of the European Union’s engagement with the Syrian side.
“We expect these issues to be resolved during the ongoing political transition process in Syria,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
