The person who attacked comedian Onise Okriashvili has voluntarily turned himself in to the police, according to an official statement by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“The individual who committed the attack on Onise Okriashvili reported to the Vake–Saburtalo district police department. He is currently being interrogated as part of the investigation into this crime, while other investigative measures are being carried out simultaneously.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 126 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which establishes liability for violence.
We will provide additional information to the public in the near future,” the statement by the Ministry of Internal Affairs reads.
A theory circulating on social media suggests that the motive for the attack may have been a joke Onise Okriashvili made during a show. While discussing who a fictional character might hypothetically “hate,” the comedian cited Nodar Dumbadze as an intentionally absurd example. A short clip of the performance taken out of context was quickly spread by pro-government TV channels and affiliated TikTok and Facebook pages, which framed it as an insult to the writer.
