The cause of a large-scale power outage in Georgia was the tripping of the 500 kV Imereti power transmission line, stated Levan Mebonia, director of the Enguri Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP).
According to him, following the line failure, the power grid’s operating mode was disrupted, leading to its total collapse.
“This line is not under my jurisdiction. We are currently connecting the power units, voltage has already been restored, and electricity supply will soon be fully recovered.
The main load from Enguri HPP is transmitted to the power grid as far as Zestafoni. A very large amount of power passed through this line. When it tripped, the operating mode was disrupted, and the entire power grid collapsed. We are currently working to clear the consequences of the failure,” Mebonia stated in a telephone comment to the Pirveli TV channel.
According to Georgian State Electrosystem, power supply was fully restored across the country by 10:15 a.m. The emergency blackout occurred at around 08:00 a.m. A similar large-scale outage occurred on July 24, when an emergency blackout was also recorded across the entire territory of Georgia.
