The international organization Transparency International has submitted a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg in the case of journalist Nanuka Zhorzholiani. According to the NGO, the complaint concerns Zhorzholiani’s three-day administrative detention.
“The court, which in our view is controlled by a corrupt clan of judges loyal to Ivanishvili, found Nanuka Zhorzholiani guilty of an administrative offense and sentenced her to three days of administrative detention. This decision is linked to her participation in a peaceful protest held on the sidewalk in front of the parliament building.
We believe that these judicial decisions clearly contradict the rights to freedom of assembly and expression, privacy, and a fair trial guaranteed by the Constitution of Georgia and the European Convention on Human Rights. Furthermore, they contradict video footage recorded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ own cameras, which clearly shows that the protesters gathered on the sidewalk in front of parliament, including Nanuka Zhorzholiani, were not obstructing anyone’s movement.
Nanuka Zhorzholiani’s complaint is already the twelfth application that our organization has submitted to the Strasbourg court in the past year alone.
We will continue to defend the violated rights of citizens in international judicial bodies, since under the Ivanishvili regime, obtaining justice in domestic courts has become impossible,” the organization said in a statement.
