Lawyer Tornike Janelidze informed Netgazeti that Hungarian journalist László Róbert Mézes will leave Georgia of his own accord. According to him, once a ticket is purchased, representatives of the Migration Department will escort him to the airport.
The Hungarian journalist was detained yesterday, August 5. The Ministry of Internal Affairs told Netgazeti that the journalist was residing in Georgia without legal grounds:
“The specified individual is in Georgia without legal grounds and has violated the allowed period of stay in the country. In connection with this, detention procedures are being conducted pursuant to Subparagraph ‘b’ of Paragraph 2 of Article 64 of the Law ‘On the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons,'” the Ministry stated.
According to human rights advocate Marika Arevadze, when the journalist’s legal period of stay in the country was expiring, he turned to her for legal assistance. She submitted an application to extend his stay, and the matter is currently being reviewed by a court.
