Nia Imnadze, one of the suspects in the murder case of teacher Giga Avaliani, has been detained in Georgia. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, she has been charged with incitement to the intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm committed by a group.
According to the agency, another suspect in the case, Anastasia Beruashvili, was detained at the same time. She is charged with failure to report a particularly serious crime.
Giga Avaliani was a young teacher and math tutor. Nia Imnadze was one of his students.
Avaliani died on October 24, 2026, after spending three weeks in a coma. The cause of death was a severe head injury sustained during an attack outside the entrance to his apartment building in Tbilisi’s Temka neighborhood.
According to the prosecution, the attack on the teacher was motivated by jealousy, and investigators state that one of the organizers of the crime was Imnadze’s partner, Aleksandre Gabashvili.
Gabashvili is a key figure in the case and is already serving a prison sentence for organizing and participating in the attack. Giorgi Rikadze and Demetre Chikovani were convicted alongside him.
The Tbilisi City Court handed down maximum sentences, which were subsequently reduced in accordance with the provisions of Georgia’s Juvenile Justice Code.
- Aleksandre Gabashvili – effectively sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison;
- Giorgi Rikadze – effectively sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison;
- Demetre Chikovani – effectively sentenced to 9 years and 9 months in prison.
Several other individuals involved in the case are also serving prison sentences. Meanwhile, court proceedings against another group of defendants remain ongoing.
Among those already in custody is Ana Naskidashvili, an acquaintance of Aleksandre Gabashvili who, according to the prosecution, was aware of the planned crime but failed to report it to law enforcement.
Trial proceedings continue against Giorgi Malania, the son of a former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia. According to investigators, he provided the attackers with personal information about Giga Avaliani, including his addresses, place of work, schedule, and route home. He has been charged with aiding and abetting.
