Georgian Prime Minister Criticizes Pressure from Previous US Administration and EU Demands

The administration of US President Donald Trump acted completely unfairly and extremely harshly toward Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated.

According to him, such an attitude became particularly evident precisely on issues concerning Georgia’s sovereignty, legislation, transparency, and societal values.

“The previous US administration often acted completely unfairly and extremely harshly toward a country it called a strategic partner, employing various mechanisms of political pressure against Georgia. Such an approach became especially noticeable precisely on matters concerning Georgia’s sovereignty, legislation, transparency, and societal values. When the Georgian authorities attempted to defend their own stance on certain issues and make independent decisions, in response we faced various forms of political and diplomatic pressure,” the Prime Minister noted.

In addition, Kobakhidze addressed the European Union, stating that “the EU demanded that Georgia repeal the transparency law, as well as the law on family values and the protection of minors—laws whose enforcement is fundamentally important both for protecting our national identity and our sovereignty.”

According to the head of government, Brussels publicly demanded and continues to demand that Tbilisi join the sanctions imposed against Russia, “which would have had devastating consequences for the Georgian economy.”
