According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia (FTS), passenger traffic through the Verkhny Lars checkpoint on the border with Georgia has broken a record. According to the agency’s data, more than 20,000 people crossed the border in a single day on August 18.
“The high intensity of tourist traffic is accompanied by a record number of passenger cars. Customs and border services are taking all necessary measures to ensure the smooth clearance of vehicles. Shifts have been reinforced and additional personnel deployed, which allows for increased throughput capacity and prompt processing of transport,” the statement reads.
A similar trend has been observed for several days, the FTS noted: on August 15 and 16, more than 19,000 people passed through the checkpoint daily. Current figures significantly exceed those for the same periods in previous years.
Due to heavy congestion, travelers are asked to take road conditions into account when planning trips to and from Georgia, strictly adhere to traffic regulations, and be prepared for longer travel times.
