Relations between Tbilisi and Kyiv have grown strained following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The ruling Georgian Dream party has repeatedly claimed that the West and Ukraine are attempting to open a “second front” against Russia in the Caucasus to drag Georgia into the war. Kyiv, in turn, has accused Tbilisi of assisting Moscow in circumventing international sanctions.
On August 24, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty/Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. Since the start of the Russian invasion, no military parades have been held in Kyiv. However, on Independence Day in 2022 and 2023, destroyed Russian tanks and other military hardware were put on display in the center of the Ukrainian capital.
