Sales of school uniforms will begin in Georgia on September 1. Following a government decision, wearing a uniform will become mandatory for first-graders across all public schools in the country starting in the autumn of 2026.
From September 1 to September 14 inclusive, uniforms can be purchased in all regions of Georgia—both at physical points of sale and online through a dedicated digital platform: formebi.emis.ge. Starting September 15, parents will be able to purchase uniforms exclusively via the online platform.
According to regulations approved by the Ministry of Education, all uniform purchases must be made via cashless payment. Payments at retail outlets can be made by bank card. Consequently, citizens will not be able to purchase school uniforms with cash.
A total of 83 retail locations will operate nationwide, open daily from 11:00 to 19:00.
When ordering online, delivery will be handled by Georgian Post. Delivery fees will be 5 GEL in Tbilisi and 7 GEL across the regions. According to the sales portal, delivery will take between 5 and 7 days.
The Government of Georgia has defined the categories of beneficiaries eligible to receive school uniforms free of charge. These include individuals who:
- are registered in the Unified Database of Socially Vulnerable Families with a family rating score below 65,001; or are enrolled in the state foster care program;
- reside in small family-type group homes; are under the care of shelters for homeless children; or reside in the Tbilisi Children’s Home;
- are Ukrainian schoolchildren residing in Georgia who, due to the war in Ukraine, are unable to continue their general education in Ukrainian schools and have enrolled in Georgian public schools;
- are children of parents with large family status (four or more children) registered in the Unified Database of Socially Vulnerable Families with a rating score above 65,000 and below 120,001.
Free school uniforms will be distributed through physical points of sale. The complimentary annual set per academic year includes: for boys—1 blazer and 2 pairs of trousers; for girls—1 blazer, 1 pair of trousers, and 1 skirt.
Meanwhile, all other parents are entitled to purchase a maximum of 2 blazers and 4 pairs of trousers for a boy, and 2 blazers, 2 pairs of trousers, and 2 skirts for a girl. The price of a blazer is 45 GEL, trousers are 25 GEL, and a skirt is also 25 GEL.
“The system will strictly record the exact items and quantities purchased under each child’s name. The system maintains rigorous records, making it physically impossible to purchase more. This will apply to everyone from grades I through VI inclusive… We are working to import additional supplies at a certain stage: if anyone needs to purchase extra clothing, that opportunity will be provided,” stated Minister of Education Givi Mikanadze.
Furthermore, according to the minister, “people are free to choose whether to order the uniform, have it custom-tailored, or purchase the garments imported by the ministry.” However, in the case of custom orders or tailoring, full compliance with the criteria, design, and fabric approved by the relevant normative act is mandatory.
The supply of school uniforms will be delivered from China to Georgia in three stages.
