Over the three years since vehicle exhaust emissions monitoring was launched in Georgia, 20,727 violations of established standards have been identified, according to the Environmental Supervision Department, as reported by Business Press News (BPN.ge).
Operating under Georgia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the department has been carrying out roadside emissions checks in the country’s four largest cities—Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi—since September 4, 2023, with the aim of curbing air pollution from the transport sector.
According to the agency, 11,273 of the detected violations were recorded in Tbilisi, 3,627 in Batumi, 3,366 in Kutaisi, and 2,461 in Rustavi.
Of the total, 18,032 violations were committed by individuals and 2,695 by legal entities.
Broken down by vehicle category, passenger cars accounted for 12,109 violations, minibuses for 7,905, trucks for 694, buses for 18, and an excavator for 1.
“Based on an analysis conducted several months after emissions inspections began, the department set out to scale up its enforcement capacity. The number of mobile patrol units was increased, hybrid vehicles were procured, and crews were equipped with appropriate measurement devices. Staff undergo regular retraining to enhance their professional qualifications,” the agency said in a statement.
The department noted that as inspectors gained the capacity to cover more locations and examine a higher volume of vehicles, the number of detected violations rose accordingly.
Specifically, the department registered 5,562 emissions violations in 2024, 6,016 in 2025, and 6,105 during the first eight months of 2026, with 743 cases recorded in August alone.
