The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, has described the remarks by the European Union’s Permanent Representative to the UN—who pointed to “arbitrary detentions and escalating repression” in Georgia—as “yet another disinformation statement.” According to Papuashvili, Michele Cervone d’Urso merely repeated a well-worn lie in his customary rhetoric.
“It is thought-provoking that statements by European Union officials are once again in direct contradiction not only with facts, but also with the values and principles recognised by the EU itself, which demands a response.
It has long been obvious to everyone that violent actions against the Georgian authorities were partially funded with European Union money, including a campaign that justified and encouraged the use of Molotov cocktails. Furthermore, it was precisely following a virtual ‘green light’ from Brussels last year, on 4 October, that an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the government was made.”
According to Papuashvili, the Georgian people and the Government of Georgia defended the country, its freedom, sovereignty, and interests, and today “it is clear to everyone that the foreign-funded revolutionary process of 2024 has failed.”
“The illusory reality through which it was planned to overthrow the government in Georgia has dissipated; however, the sponsors of this falsehood have themselves become trapped in their own false narrative, to the point that they still cannot part with it to this day.”
In his statement, the parliamentary speaker dismissed the narrative concerning election fraud and the dispersal of peaceful protests as false, noting that the violent crimes committed had been investigated and sentences delivered: everything has been documented, recorded, and, moreover, admitted by the perpetrators themselves.
“A lie will not become the truth simply because Brussels stubbornly repeats it, nor will a criminal turn into a victim just because an EU official wishes it so.
Yesterday’s statement by the European Union representative once again confirms that Brussels’ policy regarding Georgia has reached an impasse. Brussels resembles a soldier who has not realised the war is over and continues to plan combat operations.
It is time for Brussels to step out of its world of illusions. If European Union officials want to normalise relations with Georgia, they should end their aggressive rhetoric towards Georgia, cease providing media and informational support for the failed revolutionary scenario, and return to the elementary principles of diplomacy: respect for facts, Georgia’s sovereignty, and the democratic choice of the Georgian people,” Shalva Papuashvili stated.
