Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili has criticized remarks by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who suggested that candidate countries must sever ties with Donald Trump’s MAGA movement in order to join the EU.
“It seems this is a new criterion being set for candidate countries. Setting such criteria raises a smile. Unfortunately, we see that European bureaucrats are very often prone to self-isolation and urge others to do the same. Such calls are truly unacceptable,” the Foreign Minister stated.
According to Botchorishvili, such calls merely bring a smile to one’s face and are unacceptable.
“Today, we need more cooperation, more ties with everyone who plays a role in global politics. This is an influential movement whose representative currently leads one of the world’s most powerful nations. Accordingly, the demand to cut ties with them is laughable,” the Foreign Minister said.
The Minister also commented on the Georgian Prime Minister’s participation in a summit organized at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron, explaining that Tbilisi will endorse the declarations adopted within the framework of this meeting.
“It is important that Georgia is part of these discussions. Georgia has been invited to a platform created on the initiative of the French President. The discussions that will follow this event are also significant. Today, three declarations will be adopted here, and Georgia will join all three. This is a kind of starting point for global space cooperation, in which the European Union is also a participant,” Botchorishvili stated.
